The Beautiful Names Of God
Nothing you say is more powerful and holy than when you speak the different names of God. There is just something truly mesmerizing when you call Him out by name. Calling Him out from deep within with purpose will bring you closer then ever before. Understanding the meaning behind these names will teach you about his glorious character. Yahweh, Adonai, Abba, Rapha and Elohim are a few of these names.
Yahweh
This currently the most fascinating name I have discovered. YHWH is even part of my tattoo. It translates to “Lord God.” It speaks of God's strength and sovereignty. The root this name mean “self-existing.” The One who never came into being and always will be. It is the most intensely sacred name to the Jewish people that not many even pronounce the name. The vowels are almost always taken out to better emphasize this.
When broken up into “Yah” and “Weh”, many refer this to the sound of breathing. “Yah” – breathing in. “Weh” – breathing out. From your first breath after being born “Yah” until your dying breath “Weh,” you are calling out to God with every breath you take.
Adonai
This name is translated to “Lord Master.” When you call God Adonai you are acknowledging both His leadership and ownership over you. This is to be taken with gratitude and love. God gave you life and that life is His. This is a plural name in reference to the Holy Trinity. Using Adonai shows respect and honor towards God. It is understanding His place as ruler of all things. You give Him all control and surrender to his will because your life is His. God isn't this authoritarian thrashing down all who oppose Him. He is a loving merciful God.
Abba
Simply “Daddy” or “Father.” It is a term of warm affection and intimacy. I like to refer to this name when calling onto the Holy Spirit. Anytime you need to cry out to God the Holy Spirit is the presence you feel on the inside. God wants you to call onto Him as Abba just as you do to your earthly father. He wants that relationship with us much like the relationship between Him and Jesus. God calls us to be adopted into His family of believers.
Elohim
This name acknowledges God as our Almighty Creator. Elohim is the combination of two root words in Hebrew. ”El” means strength and unlimited power. “Allah” means promise keeper. While "Elohim" is grammatically plural, it's often understood to refer to the singular, 1 unique God of Israel .
Rapha
I had no idea the meaning behind this name until researching. I wasn't going to study this name for this post but I was being drawn to it.
Rapha means healer....Let us rest on that for a moment...God is the Healer of all things. He is the healer of not just physical but mental and spiritual healing as well. God can heal you from sickness if it is his will. He is more interested in your redemption and you turning away from your sins. God wants you to die from your old self and be born again unto Him.
For those who know my testimony, I have seen true redemption and change in my life. I have been made new in Christ. All it took was laying it all down at His feet in full surrender.
