Holding out his hands

I am on that daily walkway being followed by a shadow.

I see the people of habit.

They gather in their spaces doing what they do.

A lonely man turns towards me as I pass holding out his hand.

I continue with a sneer not looking back.

Tears form on his face as her lowers his hand.

He cries

”Why do you pass me?

Why can't you see?

I need you to see me.

Oh, will you just believe and take my hand.

One day you will walk with me.

Until then I will keep holding out my hand.”

Headed to church to hear the good Lord's message.

The preacher tell us you can't earn grace.

You've gotta believe for your ticket to Heaven.

Feeding the poor is good,

Helping others is good.

Only by taking Jesus' hand will you get there.

I'm headed home with a shadow.

Only to ignore the lonely man holding out his hand.

He cries

”Why do you pass me?

Why can't you see?

I need you to see me.

Oh, will you just believe and take my hand.

One day you will walk with me.

Until then I will keep holding out my hand.”

Once home and the quiet sets in thoughts of this man won't leave.

I feel him close.

Its the strangest thing.

I shutoff these thoughts and go to sleep.

Restlessness wakes me urging me to leave.

Headed towards nowhere the shadow follows me.

The lonely man holds out his hand with tears in his eyes.

I turn around to witness a light of grace.

He cries

”Why do you pass me?

Why can't you see?

I need you to see me.

Oh, will you just believe and take my hand.

One day you will walk with me.

Until then I will keep holding out my hand.”

Without a word I continue on that walkway headed towards nowhere.

The thought of him still lingers.

I feel the need to follow the preacher's word.

I've gotta believe for my ticket to Heaven.

Feeding the poor is good.

Helping others is good.

Only by taking Jesus' hand will get me there.

Headed towards that walkway the shadow stays.

I see Him standing there holding out his hand.

I cry

”Why do I pass you? Why can't I see? I need you.

Oh, I believe and take your hand.

This day I will walk with You.

Forever I will keep holding your hand.”

He wraps his arms around me keeping me close.

Showing me such grace.

I'm forgiven and covered with light.

I no longer have a shadow.

All I needed was to take his hand.
